Dr. Kumar's pursued his M.Sc. in Chemistry at the University Department of Chemistry, Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, completing the degree in August 1991. He later earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the School of Chemical Sciences at Devi Ahilya University, Indore, in December 1995.

He subsequently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Impact Assessment (PGDEIA) from the Department of Environmental Biology at Awadhesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa, in August 2000.
