Hanshi Shaswat Kumar (born 30 April 1991) is an Indian martial artist, Karate Grandmaster, and the Founder (Soke) of Senkoukai Karate, an independent Full-Contact Karate system founded in India in 2024. He is described as India's first 10th Dan Black Belt in Karate. His 10th Dan rank was awarded by Japanese martial arts Grandmaster Soke Yoshimoto Tanaka of AJMAO Headquarters, Japan, in recognition of his position as the Founder (Soke) of his own Karate system, Senkoukai Karate.

Kumar has trained and competed across multiple Karate systems, including Shito-Ryu, Shotokan and Kyokushin Full-Contact Karate. His martial arts background also includes Semi-Contact Karate, Full-Contact fighting, Combat Martial Arts, Kumite, martial arts conditioning and National Cadet Corps (NCC) training.

In 2024, he founded Senkoukai Karate as an independent Full-Contact Karate system. According to the Senkoukai Karate organization, the system was subsequently recognized by the International Bujutsu Karate Association (IBKA), Japan, as an independent Full-Contact Karate style.

Early life

Grandmaster Hanshi Shaswat Kumar was born on 30 April 1991, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. From a very young age, he developed a deep interest in martial arts. Recognizing his passion, his father enrolled him in a Shito-Ryu Karate Academy near their home when he was still a child.

Alongside martial arts, Kumar was also a good student and an active sportsman during his school years. He was particularly fond of cricket and regularly participated in various sporting activities.

He began his formal education at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, Niladri Vihar, where he studied from Nursery through Class 4. He later continued his education at BDA UGUP School, beginning from Class 5. From Classes 8 to 10, he completed his high-school education at Government High School, Phase-II, Sailashree Vihar.

In 2007, his father, who was a government employee, was transferred to Hyderabad. At that time, Hyderabad was part of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh. Kumar subsequently completed his college education at Hindi Maha Vidyalaya, Nallakunta, Hyderabad.

During his college years, he also participated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). His NCC training further strengthened his physical fitness, mental discipline, confidence, leadership skills, teamwork, and ability to face challenging situations. This experience played an important role in developing his disciplined, determined, and resilient personality as a martial artist.

Beginning of his Karate journey

Even after moving to Hyderabad, Kumar continued his Karate training. At that time, there was no suitable Karate academy near his home, so he regularly travelled approximately 18 kilometres by bus to attend his training sessions.

Over the years, he trained in several major Karate systems, including Shito-Ryu, Shotokan, and Kyokushin Full-Contact Karate. His dedication, discipline, and competitive ability established him as a strong fighter from a young age.

He represented Odisha at the state level and later represented Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Karate competitions. During his competitive career, he won numerous medals and achieved significant success at national and international championships.

He became known as a highly competitive fighter from an early age. He won National Karate Championship gold medals for five consecutive years without defeat, representing his state. He also became a champion at international Karate championships and won several international medals.

Experience in Semi-Contact and Full-Contact Karate

In 2015, Kumar also competed under the sports Karate system associated with the Karate Association of India, where he performed strongly in national-level championships.

One of his distinguishing qualities as a fighter was his ability to compete successfully in both Semi-Contact and Full-Contact Karate. This experience gave him a broad understanding of different competition formats, fighting strategies, training methods, and the practical demands of Karate competition.

He had a long-standing ambition to accomplish something significant for Indian Karate. However, after becoming increasingly disappointed with the politics surrounding sports Karate and experiencing what he describes as a serious breach of trust involving his own master, he decided to step away from competitive sports Karate.

Kyokushin leadership and further experience

Following his competitive career, Kumar became the Country Chief of the India Branch of the Kyokushin Karate International Association Headquarters, USA.

This responsibility provided him with further experience in both sports Karate and Full-Contact Karate. It also gave him a deeper understanding of Karate organizations, administration, training systems, and the challenges within the martial arts community.

Because of his previous experiences, he maintained a certain distance from various Karate federations and organizations and focused more closely on his own development, martial arts research, teaching, and the development of his vision for a new approach to Karate.

Inspiration behind Senkoukai Karate

A major turning point in Kumar's life came when he saw television reports about the Nirbhaya case. The incident deeply affected him and made him reflect on the practical effectiveness of the martial arts being taught to ordinary people for self-defence.

He began questioning whether traditional Karate training, which often requires many years of dedicated practice before a practitioner develops a high level of practical ability, could be developed in a way that would provide more effective and practical self-defence skills.

With this thought in mind, he decided that he wanted to create something different.

However, when he approached various federations and martial arts masters for support, he did not receive the support he had hoped for. Rather than abandoning his idea, he discussed his vision with his Grandmaster, Masaki Watanabe of Japan, a Japanese Karate master.

Grandmaster Masaki Watanabe advised him that if he wanted to create something genuinely different, he could not simply modify an existing system. He would have to build a new system from the foundation.

Inspired by this advice, Kumar began working toward the creation of his own Karate system.

Founding and development of Senkoukai Karate

In 2024, after consulting with senior Japanese Karate masters, Grandmaster Hanshi Shaswat Kumar founded Senkoukai Karate as an independent Full-Contact Karate system.

The name "Senkoukai" was given to Hanshi Shaswat Kumar by the renowned Japanese martial arts master Hirofumi Kuroki.

Senkoukai Karate was developed by combining techniques and principles from Kyokushin Karate, Shotokan Karate, and various Combat Martial Arts. The system also incorporates pressure-point techniques, joint-locking techniques, and selected techniques inspired by animal movements and combat principles.

A distinctive feature of Senkoukai Karate is its emphasis on practical self-defence. Training focuses on understanding how ordinary objects and environmental elements commonly found in the street or surrounding environment may be used for protection in an emergency situation when necessary.

The system also includes its own structured curriculum and a dedicated series of 20 official Senkoukai Karate Kata.

Conditioning, speed and power

Senkoukai Karate is known for its emphasis on physical conditioning, speed, power, endurance, and practical fighting ability. Its training methodology places strong importance on developing a practitioner's physical strength and combat readiness alongside technical Karate skills.

The system combines traditional Karate training with intensive conditioning and Full-Contact practice to develop fighters who are physically prepared, technically capable, and mentally disciplined.

Independent Karate system

Senkoukai Karate is established as an independent Full-Contact Karate style. As an independent system, it follows its own rules, syllabus, training methodology, grading structure, and technical curriculum rather than being governed by the rules of another Karate style organization, federation, council, or world council.

The authority for the development, administration, curriculum, grading, and certification of Senkoukai Karate rests within the Senkoukai Karate organization.

Under its own grading system, Senkoukai Karate has the authority to conduct its own examinations and issue ranks and belts up to 10th Dan Black Belt, in accordance with its established rules and requirements.

The development of Senkoukai Karate represents Hanshi Shaswat Kumar's vision of bringing together traditional Karate principles, Full-Contact fighting, practical combat techniques, physical conditioning, speed, power, and modern self-defence concepts into a distinct and independently structured Karate system.
