redBus is an Indian multinational online ticketing platform focused primarily on bus travel and ground transportation. Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the company operates as a marketplace that connects passengers with private bus operators and state transport corporations.

The platform enables customers to book bus tickets through its website, mobile applications and partner channels without owning or operating buses itself. redBus has also expanded into rail ticketing through redRail, along with ferry, shuttle and other travel-related services in selected international markets.

Founded in August 2006 by Phanindra Sama, Charan Padmaraju and Sudhakar Pasupunuri, the company was originally incorporated as Pilani Soft Labs Pvt. Ltd.. It later became one of India's most prominent internet startup success stories and was acquired by the Ibibo Group in 2013.[1]

As of 2026, redBus operates across India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru and Colombia, with MakeMyTrip serving as its parent company.[2]

History

Founding and Early Years

The idea for redBus originated from a travel-related problem experienced by co-founder Phanindra Sama. In 2005, while working as an engineer in Bengaluru, Sama reportedly struggled to obtain a bus ticket to Hyderabad during the Diwali holiday period. The experience highlighted the fragmented nature of India's intercity bus industry, where seat availability was spread across numerous independent operators and travel agents.[3]

In August 2006, Sama launched the company with Charan Padmaraju and Sudhakar Pasupunuri. All three founders were engineering graduates from BITS Pilani. The business was incorporated as Pilani Soft Labs Pvt. Ltd. and initially focused on creating a technology platform capable of aggregating bus seat inventory.

redBus developed software integrations for larger bus operators and offered reservation technology to smaller operators. Its operator-facing products included BOSS and SeatSeller, allowing bus companies and travel agents to manage and distribute ticket inventory.[4]

Acquisition and MakeMyTrip

In June 2013, the Ibibo Group acquired redBus in one of the major early acquisitions in India's consumer internet sector. Contemporary reports estimated the transaction value at more than $100 million.[5]

The founders later exited the operational leadership of the company, and Prakash Sangam became CEO in 2014.[6]

In January 2017, MakeMyTrip completed its combination with the Ibibo Group, bringing redBus under the MakeMyTrip corporate structure alongside other travel brands.[7]

Business Model and Operations

redBus operates primarily as an online marketplace rather than a transport operator. The company aggregates ticket inventory from private bus companies and state road transport organisations and earns revenue through commissions and technology-related services.

The platform has built an ecosystem that includes consumer ticketing services, operator software and business-to-business distribution tools. Its growth has been particularly significant in Tier-II and Tier-III markets, where offline travel agents continue to represent an important part of the transportation booking ecosystem.[8]

Products and Services

redBus provides multiple consumer and business-oriented products.

  • Bus Ticketing – Online booking for private operators and state transport services.
  • redRail – Rail ticket booking services operated through an authorised partnership with IRCTC.[9]
  • Primo – A curated category of bus operators meeting defined standards related to punctuality, ratings and passenger experience.
  • SeatSeller – A distribution platform for travel agents and third-party booking partners.
  • redPro – An analytics platform designed for bus operators.
  • revMax – A technology-driven pricing platform for managing ticket demand and pricing.
  • NOVA – A business-to-business marketplace for products and services used by India's intercity bus industry.[10]

The company also supports selected ferry, shuttle and other ground transportation services in international markets.

International Expansion

redBus began international expansion with Singapore and Malaysia in 2015. It later expanded into Peru through the acquisition of Busportal and subsequently developed operations in Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The company operates separate country-specific platforms in its major markets, including India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru and Colombia.

Partnerships

redBus has entered into partnerships with transportation companies, technology platforms and travel-related businesses. Past collaborations have included integrations with Google Maps, Truecaller and Amazon India.[11][12]

The company also partnered with Grab to provide bus and ferry booking services within the Grab ecosystem in selected Southeast Asian markets.[13]

Financial Performance

redBus does not publicly report separate standalone financial results. Its performance is primarily reflected within MakeMyTrip's reported Bus Ticketing segment.

For the financial year ended 31 March 2026, MakeMyTrip reported bus ticketing adjusted margin of $163.9 million, representing strong growth compared with the previous financial year.[14]

Marketing and Competition

redBus has previously worked with celebrities including cricketer MS Dhoni and actor Allu Arjun. The company later shifted toward regional storytelling and digital-focused marketing to address India's diverse linguistic and geographic markets.

Its competitors include AbhiBus, Paytm, Yatra, IntrCity, Zingbus and other digital travel platforms. However, offline travel agents continue to represent a significant competitive alternative within India's bus ticketing market.
