Madhurendra Kumar
Madhurendra Kumar (born 5 September 1994) is an Indian sand artist, sculptor, visual artist, and leaf artist known for creating monumental sand sculptures and socially relevant public artworks. He has gained national and international recognition for transforming natural materials into artistic expressions promoting environmental conservation, cultural heritage, climate awareness, wildlife protection, and social responsibility.[1]
Born in East Champaran district of Bihar, India, Madhurendra has represented India at numerous national and international sand sculpture festivals. Madhurendra Kumar was born on 5 September 1994 in Barwakala, Ghorasahan, East Champaran, Bihar, India. His ancestral village is Bijbani, Bankatwa, East Champaran. He was born into a financially modest farming family to Shivkumar Sah and Gena Devi.
During childhood, he assisted his family with farming and livestock while nurturing a passion for art. Inspired by the sandbanks of the Aruna River, he began creating sculptures from river sand, laying the foundation for his artistic career.
Education
Despite financial hardship, Madhurendra completed:
- Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Sculpture
- Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Sculpture
from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKV), Varanasi.
To support his education, he worked in various occupations including selling dairy products, painting signboards, weaving bamboo baskets, and undertaking manual labour.
